Man Of Steel Review

A much anticipated film Man Of Steel has just been released. A great deal of anticipation followed this film because of the disappointing Superman Returns and the fact Man Of Steel is produced by same team that made The Dark Knight Trilogy. Christopher Nolan however did not direct this film and people are saying this because he knew he could not make it good. However the film works. Despite many negative reviews from critics I think this is the perfect superman movie.

A lot of the issues that other critics have had I do not see. I mean I can understand why they said what they said but I have to disagree with them. Man Of Steel is a fantastic film. Despite being over two hours long I think it is completely worth it.  Some of the story may have been irrelevant and people suggest plot holes but they are not an issue with me.

Critics have also said that the film takes ages to get going but I think this works. we need to be introduced to this character in the correct way rather than it being rushes. There is also a great deal of action in this film on par with Transformers and many critics have said this distracts from the human story between Jonathan and Clark Kent. I say that this has the perfect balance of action, heart and drama. We get to understand Clark Kent’s mind and how he sees others, and we also get to see how powerful he is as Superman.

The special effects of the film are also amazing. The opening scenes on Krypton looked so real and the fight scenes on earth looked less real but still were breathtaking to look at. The fight scenes also were very good. I hope a lot of it was filmed rather than created digitally. I would like to think that some of Nolan is in this film. Nolan has tended not to use CGI if necessary. I do think seeing it appear on camera is far better than special effects. I can understand the flying fight scenes were CGI but some of the close up fighting looked brutal and real.

The film is perfectly cast as well. There is no one in the film that dissapointed me at all. Some chcaracters were not used as much as they should have been but they all worked. Henry Cavill looks the part and portrays Clark in a realistic gritty way some calling him an emo superman. Michael Shannon was chilling as the villain General Zod, his voice and his presence added so much to the character and I think he was perfectly cast. Amy Adams was a good Lois Lane despite being ginger. I hope people are not put off by the fact it not completely loyal to the comics but that shouldn’t matter. Other cast members gave brilliant performances Kevin Costner especially with his interatction with Clark Kent. Some of the best scenes are between Kevin Costner and different ages of Clark Kent. This performance in particular added a human element to the film which was really quite beautiful

As for the wider universe there is no cameo appearences by any Justice League characters  however there are two easter eggs in the film that show Lex Luthor and Bruce Waynes companies. As for a justice league movie I could see this version of superman starting it, however I feel this may not be needed. Man of Steel can carry its own series and I really don’t want to see a Justice League movie made just for the sake of it to attempt to rival Marvel’s Avengers.

Overall the film is highly entertaining and still included many elements of Nolan’s Batman whilst at the same time being very different. This is a good story with heart and fantastic visuals and even though it may not be loyal to the comics we get a superman who is grounded in the real world.
