One of the the most anticipated films of 2015 was Batman VS Superman. Was. Production on the Man of Steel sequel has been delayed for 10 months. Filming was due to start in February 2014 and the film was due for release in the summer of 2015. Rumors are that Ben Affleck has suffered a leg injury and this has caused filming to be delayed. The delay has also been put down to the trouble with casting and that people may end up getting recast due to scheduling conflicts. Or maybe this is to work around the scheduling conflicts.
The current rumors floating around on casting are that the villains of the film will be Lex Luthor and Doomsday. Bryan Cranston, Mark Strong and recently Joaquin Phoenix have been rumored for the role. For Doomsday Jason Mamoa was rumored but has denied involvement and recently it was announced that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is going to appear in the film and would be playing Doomsday.
Another rumor is that Synder needs more time to complete his vision and the film will be released in 2016.There were rumors a few days ago that stated that this film and the Justice League movie would shoot back to back. This delay may allow that to happen. Maybe this is just rumors for now we just have to wait and see.
All of these could be true or they could be exaggerated. I think that Batman VS Superman will now not be released until 2016 and it will likely shoot back to back with the planned Justice League movie which is scheduled for 2017 but that has not been set in stone.
How do you feel about the delay? Who would you recast? Please comment and thanks for reading.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe started with Iron Man back in 2008 and led the The Avengers which is the highest grossing film of all time. Robert Downey Jr has brought Tony Stark to life and there is no doubt that people love this character so much. Robert Downey Jr has portrayed Tony Stark 5 times including a brief cameo in The Incredible Hulk and will reprise the role in Avengers: Age Of Ultron. Something has surprised me about the standalone Iron Man films. People love the character of Tony Stark but find the films a bit rubbish. I did think Iron Man was good and I think the series is decent but they are not without its flaws. Iron Man 3 for me has a great many flaws which I will discuss.
First of all Tony Stark is an eccentric billionaire, playboy. philanthropist and is a narcissist and overly arrogant. Iron Man 3 went for a much darker tone similar to what Christopher Nolan did with his Batman trilogy. I do think this was a mistake to make Tony Stark a darker and weary character. I think Marvel have lighter tones to their films and have a great deal of comic relief. Seeing someone we love suddenly become weary may be interesting for some but not for all. I think Tony is this film was too depressing and even though the film had its lighter moments it was aiming for a darker tone.
The plot for me is nothing special and seems to be not much more than a simple revenge movie. The plot does deviate quite a lot and the film is full of plot holes. I do not like discussing plot holes as frankly we are not watching real life and nothing is perfect so I can let most plot holes go. Part of the film sees Tony Stark turn up in Tennessee and the world presumes that he is dead. I feel that these scenes had no relevance whatsoever and were forced upon the audience.
One of the major issues with the film is the Mandarin plot twist. Now this is a SPOILER so if you have not seen the film or are aware of the twist then I suggest you stop reading. However I assume most people have seen this by now or at least heard about the outrage of the plot twist. Anyway, the trailers showed us that Ben Kingsley is portraying The Mandarin but after Tony and Rhodes raid his compound they discover that he is a fake and is a British actor who is working for the real villain Alrdich Killian played by Guy Pearce. I guess it was an interesting plot choice but I was really upset that they changed the Mandarin. Killian also later claims to be the real Mandarin and sports a dragon tattoo. However there is a rumor going around that Ben Kingley is working on a short marvel film in which he plays the real Mandarin. That would be cool if it turns out to be true.
The action sequences in the film are cool and I was surprised to see them done so well with Shane Black directing as he has not directed a film of this scale before. However because of what Iron Man is some of the fight sequences seem a bit too faced paced and I feel that audiences will not get to savor how good the fights are. However I am sure fans were happy to see fight scenes in such a large scale.
I do give some credit to the film as although the other Avengers are not in the film we do not miss them. I feel that Tony Stark is interesting on his own to carry a movie and to be honest he is the main character of The Avengers films. I do think that this film gives Rhodes a lot more to do and I feel that his character was underused in both the previous Iron Man films. Don Cheadle does not steal the show but he plays an interesting contrast to Tony which I think audiences did enjoy.
Overall I do think that this film did a decent job and is no doubt entertaining. I know that die hard fans do not like it as they feel that it betrayed the original content of the comic. This is more like a sequel to The Avengers than Iron Man 2 and I suspect the action taken by Tony at the end of the movie will lead to the events of Age Of Ultron. Until I see that I cannot really say much but I do think this film has a great deal of relevance to the next Avengers film.

There have been many great films over the years and I have had joyous and wonderful moments through the art of cinema. This is due to a lot of factors. But I like to give credit to the person with the vision. The Director. There are many directors who I admire and so many I could put on this list but I had to keep it to five. Here are my top 5 directors.
5. Clint Eastwood
Clint Eastwood started off acting and got involved in directing later on. Now many people will know him mainly for his roles in westerns but Eastwood has shown his directing range and made interesting and entertaining films for the mass audiences. He has directed westerns which is what he is known for but has branched out into different genres. His film Unforgiven received Oscar nominations including best director for which Eastwood won. He then went on to get another win for directing for Million Dollar Baby. As well as receiving nominations for other films such as Mystic River and Letters From Iwo Jima. He has also demonstrated great acting and directing in his films over the years and the fact he was an actor adds to his directing skill I think. And he is still directing now at 83 years old. He is currently working on Jersey Boys and may be directing the film American Sniper about Chris Kyle shortly after.
4. Steven Spielberg
Steven Spielberg is possibly the most famous and most commercially successful directors to have ever lived. He has showed both range and consistency in his directing. Working on action adventure films such as Indiana Jones, working on intense pieces like Schindler’s List of working on animation in Tintin. Now his films do vary with their critical acclaim but I think it is fair to say that Steven Spielberg is a highly skilled director and really knows what he is doing. He also is involved in producing lots of projects which both are successful critically and commercially. its good to see a director work on varied films. He has directed almost 50 films on his career and it is clear that he loves to work and devoted to high quality. You just need to watch any of his films to understand how good a director he is. His most recent film was Lincoln which received critical acclaim and for a biopic it did very well at the box office.
3. Ridley Scott
Ridley Scott is known to be a very difficult man to work with and despite he may not be as calm as other directors whilst working he seems to get the job done. He has made some iconic films and has been involved in producing many other projects. He has directed some of the most iconic films of the 20th century such as Alien and Blade Runner and at 75 years old he is still working. I like the fact that his films are varied and that he can deliver in both small films with few actors and a small scale such as Alien and then work on epic pieces of cinema like Black Hawk Down. For me is is a truly great director. I also heard a story about Alien. His storyboards were so good and clear about conveying the vision to the producers that he got the films budget doubled simply for the detail and effort he put into per-production. His next film The Counselor comes out this month and has a great ensemble cast and the screenplay was written by the great Cormac Mcarthy.
2. Quentin Tarantino
Tarantino has a unique style and his characters are in deep with pop culture references which really adds so much to his films. It appears that all his films take place in the same universe and that he has created a parallel world which has interesting characters and fun plots. Writing his stuff from scratch rather than adapting novels or stories he has really been able to leave his mark on the world of directing. Tarantino without doubt is the auteur of this generation and will be remembered as one of the most iconic directors of all time. He works very well with actors he has worked with before and is very involved in casting his projects as he tends to write characters for specific actors. I think this highlights that he has a clear vision of what he wants his films to be and that is a sign of a great director.
1. Christopher Nolan
Christopher Nolan is my favorite director at the moment because I think he is a fantastic director and I will even call him an auteur. He seems to get the very best out of his actors and everyone who works on his films to make high quality motion pictures. I know he does not like to use visual effects in films and prefers the use of special effects and stunts. The corridor scene from Inception was all filmed on a rotating rig. The snow scenes were shot up in the mountains. In The Dark Knight the truck was really flipped. Some directors would not take the challenge of being so practical with effects but he does. Also his films do contain a great mix of action and plot and he makes a film interesting both visually and through his high story telling skills. I have not hated any of the films he has done and I am looking forward to his next project Interstellar which will be released next year.
What do you think about these directors? I know I have missed some classic directors off this list but I felt this list reflects the time we live in now. Thanks for reading.
I loved Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and feel that it will stand out as one of the best trilogies that have ever been made. The Trilogy itself had a defining ending and allowed this character of Bruce Wayne to be portrayed realistically. The film is set in a much more belivable universe compared to other superhero movies.
I have just found out this rumor that Bale is being offered $50 million to return as Batman in Man Of Steel 2. Whilst some may be happy about this I am not. I really think Bale’s batman running around with Superman will destroy the mythos of Nolan’s trilogy. Bale has said previously that he will not do another Batman film but would $50 Million change his mind.
I really hope that he does not appear again. To steal a line from The Dark Knight ‘Look whoever the Batman is, he doesn’t want to do this for the rest of his life. How could he? Batman is looking for someone to take up his mantle.’. I think this line reflects it. Bale does not want to be type cast as Batman for the rest of his life.
I do however think Bale portrayed a brilliant Batman and I am only upset if he would return because The Dark Knight Rises had a definitive ending. Maybe if he played a slightly different version of Batman I would be okay with it but most audiences would just assume it is the same incarnation and that would ruin the mythos of the trilogy.
Bale is the right age to be playing this new Batman. At almost 40 years old he is exactly the age Warner Brothers want to play this new Batman. Bale said last month ‘we were fortuante to make three films lets not get greedy’. So I hope that he sticks to what he has said.
I would rather he not return as Batman but if it is done correctly I may be able to accept it. We now just have to wait for the news to come in if he will star in it or not. What do you think? Would you like to see Bale return as Batman? Please comment below.
In June I blogged about if the Justice League movie would happen or not. If it was to happen I suggested a few things. Those things have come true. I predicted correctly. I said that a Justice League movie should not be done till 2017 and that is the case. I said that Batman and Superman should team up in a film first, that is the case. And that other League members should be introduced in others films, so far A Flash movie has been confirmed.
I am happy that Warner Brothers are no rushing into a Justice League movie. I did think a Batman reboot should have been done first but after thinking about it, it is not necessary. We all know Batman’s origin story initially. We know what happens to his parents, we knows he is a billionaire, we know he travels the world to become a detective and a fighter. Why would another film get made to explore that.
I did really enjoy Man Of Steel and it is a great starting point for a Justicec League movie. I am not sure at the moment how the film will work out. As with the title of the film it is unknown. We can assume that Batman and Superman are going to face off each other and eventually join forces. Will there be a villain they need to take down together? I really can’t say.
I do think that maybe Lex Luthor will appear as a minor role and maybe set up to be the main villain in Man Of Steel 3. Darkseid has been rumored to be the villain in the Justice League movie so I doubt he will be the villain. Others have suggested Doomsday will be the villain for this film. Maybe a Batman villain will be the threat of this one?
I am anxious about this film as I love Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy so much and I am very greatful that his creation is protected by him and will not appear in the Justuice League. If there is a new Batman it will have to be very different from Christian Bales’ portrayal. I think Luke Evans should play the role of Batman in this film. Others are already suggesting Ryan Gosling, Armie Hammer, Michael Fassbender and Idris Elba. Casting needs to be spot on if they are going to make this work.
Overall I am both nervous and excited about this project and I have felt that Warner Brothers only inteneded to make Justice League because of The Avengers. The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel all did well at the box office I don’t want to see this made as a pathetic attempt to try and get one over on Marvel. It should be done correctly or not at all.
What do you think of this film? Who would you like to see portray Batman? Who should the villain be? Please comment below and thanks for reading.
Studios always look to make money with big budget motion pictures which will usually make hundreds of millions if not cross the billion dollar mark. In recent years comic book movies have become popular and keep getting made. Marvel is currently in phase two of its film plan with the success of phase one which included Iron Man, Captain America and now the highest grossing film ever Avengers Assemble. They have now moved on to Phase two which is including Iron Man 3, Guardians Of The Galaxy and Avengers 2.
DC comics and Warner Brothers also had success with Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy. With the success of its own films and the success of Avengers Warner Brothers is now developing a Justice League movie. The Justice League movie is being set up with Man Of Steel and initially Warner Brothers wanted Nolan’s Batman in the Justice League.
I am glad that Nolan’s Batman will not be in the Justice League as that version of Batman was grounded in reality and could not exist in a wider universe. I do personally think that Nolan’s version of Batman being in the Justice league would ruin the lore of the trilogy. I do think that Man of Steel was the perfect set up for the Justice League movie but now it has to be handled in the right way.
I do not think that they should make a Justice league movie for the sake of competing with the Avengers, I think that will be a big mistake and it will be far too rushed. Warner Brothers want the film out by 2015 however I reckon it wont get made until 2017 at the latest or maybe not at all. At first Zack Synder did not want his version of Superman in the Justice League and having now given in he has still said he would want a second Superman film before a Justice League movie to explore the character more.
And the way Marvel did it was to introduce all the characters in their own films first and then bring them all together. Rather than just copying this Warner Brothers and DC need to go at a slower pace before tackling the Justice League Movie. Others have said we should get a second Superman Film, a new Batman Film and then Superman and Batman should team up at first. People feel it will be too unbelievable that all these superheroes have appeared coincidentally at the same time.
Its obviously up to the studios who would fund the projects but I think rushing the film will mean less sucess at teh box office and less appeal to people who would watch the sequels. If they take it slower a Justice League movie can work but I really don’t think they will wait that long before making the movie.
What do you think? Should a Justice League Movie be released by 2015 or should the filmmakers have more time to create and explore characters? Please comment and thanks for reading.
A much anticipated film Man Of Steel has just been released. A great deal of anticipation followed this film because of the disappointing Superman Returns and the fact Man Of Steel is produced by same team that made The Dark Knight Trilogy. Christopher Nolan however did not direct this film and people are saying this because he knew he could not make it good. However the film works. Despite many negative reviews from critics I think this is the perfect superman movie.
A lot of the issues that other critics have had I do not see. I mean I can understand why they said what they said but I have to disagree with them. Man Of Steel is a fantastic film. Despite being over two hours long I think it is completely worth it. Some of the story may have been irrelevant and people suggest plot holes but they are not an issue with me.
Critics have also said that the film takes ages to get going but I think this works. we need to be introduced to this character in the correct way rather than it being rushes. There is also a great deal of action in this film on par with Transformers and many critics have said this distracts from the human story between Jonathan and Clark Kent. I say that this has the perfect balance of action, heart and drama. We get to understand Clark Kent’s mind and how he sees others, and we also get to see how powerful he is as Superman.
The special effects of the film are also amazing. The opening scenes on Krypton looked so real and the fight scenes on earth looked less real but still were breathtaking to look at. The fight scenes also were very good. I hope a lot of it was filmed rather than created digitally. I would like to think that some of Nolan is in this film. Nolan has tended not to use CGI if necessary. I do think seeing it appear on camera is far better than special effects. I can understand the flying fight scenes were CGI but some of the close up fighting looked brutal and real.
The film is perfectly cast as well. There is no one in the film that dissapointed me at all. Some chcaracters were not used as much as they should have been but they all worked. Henry Cavill looks the part and portrays Clark in a realistic gritty way some calling him an emo superman. Michael Shannon was chilling as the villain General Zod, his voice and his presence added so much to the character and I think he was perfectly cast. Amy Adams was a good Lois Lane despite being ginger. I hope people are not put off by the fact it not completely loyal to the comics but that shouldn’t matter. Other cast members gave brilliant performances Kevin Costner especially with his interatction with Clark Kent. Some of the best scenes are between Kevin Costner and different ages of Clark Kent. This performance in particular added a human element to the film which was really quite beautiful
As for the wider universe there is no cameo appearences by any Justice League characters however there are two easter eggs in the film that show Lex Luthor and Bruce Waynes companies. As for a justice league movie I could see this version of superman starting it, however I feel this may not be needed. Man of Steel can carry its own series and I really don’t want to see a Justice League movie made just for the sake of it to attempt to rival Marvel’s Avengers.
Overall the film is highly entertaining and still included many elements of Nolan’s Batman whilst at the same time being very different. This is a good story with heart and fantastic visuals and even though it may not be loyal to the comics we get a superman who is grounded in the real world.
Hollywood is struggling to come up with new fresh ideas and in order to make money many films are being remade or rebooted. There are still so many stories and potential that is yet to be explored though even films that seem original usually follow a narrative structure and genre which makes the film experience less fresh.
With Reboots this seems to be a new way to make money and is usually used with comic book movies. As you may know when a film series wants to start again they will reboot the series taking it in a different direction. If you look at the Batman series that started in 1989 with Tim Burton’s Batman and finishing with Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin it has a very different tone from the reboot created by Christopher Nolan in 2005 with Batman Begins. Nolan created a series which was far more grounded in reality than its predecessors. Comic book movies are easy to reboot because there are so many published stories from comic books which can take characters in a different direction.
Films however can be remade as well sometimes for good reason. For example a lot of foreign films get remade by Hollywood in order to make the story more appealing to a global audience. For example The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was made in Sweden and received a Hollywood remake in 2011 directed by David Fincher. For filmmakers this seems to be a easy way to make money as a lot of foreign films are difficult to follow and cinema audiences are passive and when at the cinema are not interested in watching a foreign language film.
Many big budget films are remade and rebooted. We have recently seen Superman, Star Trek, Spider-man and Judge Dredd rebooted. And over the next year we will see Reboots of Robocop, Godzilla and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Remaking and rebooting films does however allow dated films to be shown to a brand new audience and this creates appeal to new generations. Even films from the 90s that are being remade can be remade today with better special effects and hopefully learn from the mistakes of the original. Remakes and reboots may be considered to be quick and easy money and defile the art but they do hold a purpose in the film industry.
